On January 30, Malu Pierini unveils her long-awaited debut album Libera Me. Today brings the album’s guiding single, ‘Pourquoi’ (French for “why?”).
“The song is about my grandmother, who travelled to Paris as a young dancer, drawn in by the spotlight and a sweeping romance,” Pierini shares, ”But slowly she realised life was not the dream she had imagined. ’Pourquoi’ is, on one level, about giving everything to a love that does not return the same devotion – and about how I’ve found myself repeating her story in my own blind corners and patterns. Yet the song is also deeply existential: it explores how the smallest choices ripple across time, eventually carrying me – sixty years later – onto a stage just as she once stood.”
Sonically, ‘Pourquoi’ drifts in like a postcard from Paris: intimate, wistful, and soft at the edges, with a vocal delivery steeped in both drama and vulnerability. Hints of Édith Piaf flicker through the melody, yet set in a modern universe where sensitivity meets theatrical flair.
