BODUR enters a new chapter with ‘TAPESTRY [HIJAZ]’ influenced by Maqam, a traditional Arabic system of microtonal music, something that she began exploring after learning to play the Oud, a fretless, Middle Eastern string instrument. Flitting between BODUR’s rich and distorted vocals, tension builds within the Gabriel Gifford (Harvey Causon, Lucy Lu) production as she tackles “generational trauma and the impact that has on our family that we love ‘.

Inspired by Hijaz – a Maqam mood that gives feelings of solitude, enchantment, mysticism and distant desert – BODUR captures the essence of a desert transitioning from sunset to midnight. BODUR who wrote and executive produced the track formed a creative relationship with director partnership Furmaan Ahmed (SOPHIE, Shygirl, Eartheater, Celeste) and creative director Rukaiyah Qazi for the accompanying visualizer capturing the core themes within the music.

Spanning over 3 tracks, she effortlessly weaves through themes of youth, growth, and rebirth, offering a political and personal project. The EP captures three stages of transformation that document a journey of self-acceptance aimed to inspire South Asian and Middle Eastern women plagued by battles of identity. ÖZ presents a sound that sits within BODUR’s own alternative realm of electronic music which can only be described as mesmerising, sensual and powerful.

Having launched in April, BODUR took listeners on a poetic journey with ‘GORGEOUS’, which explored what it means for her to belong to multiple cultures. She followed up with most recent release, ‘DON’T BEAT THE SWEET OUT OF MY BOY’ alongside long-term friend Denzel Himself, an ode to the grip toxic masculinity can hold over young men.

BODUR formed a creative relationship with model and director Jade O’Belle who directed videos for ‘GORGEOUS’ and new video ‘MUMMY’ that aligns with the EP’s release. The usage of mirrors throughout Jade’s work is a symbol of reflection, self-image, gaze and perspective – along with warm tones of orange and red – to highlight the concepts of the project.

“An ode to her diaspora daughters”, on ‘GORGEOUS’ BODUR explores what it means to her to belong to multiple cultures and the beauty and struggles that comes with that. Poetic metaphors such as “look what you did for your daughters, brown bread, buttered and gorgeous” represent words of appreciation for her ancestors who broke down barriers for generations that follow. Further capturing what it means to have a multi-hyphenated identity, the 25-year-old summarises the thoughts of women of colour in her own alternative realm of electronic music.

“’GORGEOUS’ defines what’s expected of a girl from my background, learning to love myself and my heritage,” explains the artist. “Every line questions what it means to be “home”. I have a constant feeling of wanting full acceptance from my Turkish and Sri Lankan roots without settling into one binary identity. It’s all about accepting the middle space, defying what’s expected of you, and loving yourself despite the barriers we’ve faced.”
