With its gentle acoustic arrangement, ‘Weight’ allows the songwriting to take centre stage. Inspired by a memorable encounter on the tube, the track offers a more visceral side to Jo’s songwriting, as she explains: “I wrote this song after a brief interaction with a man on the tube. It brought me an out-of-body thought of not recognising who you are and how to immerse yourself in living.

“I tried this song out for the first time with the band in rehearsal for Left of the Dial last year and it stopped us all in our tracks. I don’t usually make this much noise, so it felt new and weird, but also very natural.”

The video was directed by Jo alongside Rosa Levenson, and shot on the hottest day of the year in London at Alexandra Palace’s ice rink where Jo holds a part-time job. All the members of the cast are Jo’s friends and colleagues. One of the skaters is her sister, Grace.

The track is accompanied with a music video co-directed by Jo and her creative collaborator Rosa Levenson, which takes to the tennis court for a surrealist vent on the track’s lyrical frustrations.

Speaking of her first release, jo from school explains: “‘Chicken’ represents fear, shame and embarrassment. It’s about leaving a person and a time behind. ‘Chickening’ is about cowardice, but is also a reference to the beautiful & cheap ‘chicken’ wine my friends and I love dearly.

“The lyrics of Chicken sound themselves quickly. Usually I’m more meticulous on my choices and phrasings but this time the process was to let me say whatever I needed to get out.”
