Sure, they might have a Norwegian grammy for Rock, a handful of world tours, praise from nearly every major music outlet, and fans with lyric-tattoos. They might also be down a few original band members. But in 2025, Sløtface are DIY and dirty once again.

Their new single ‘YES CHEF,’ out today, marks the first independent release on their own Oslo-based label Dagen er ødelagt (“The Day Is Ruined”), run by vocalist and band captain Haley Shea together with drummer and producer Ola Djupvik (Pom Poko, Shiner).

Sløtface’s first independent release since their early days, ‘YES CHEF’ is a breathless, chaotic, car-crash rollercoaster of a track — a two-minute thrill ride from a band with a new-found joy in experimentation and creative freedom. On the single, Shea takes on the role of a sadomasochistic chef, channelling the raw spirit of old-school Anthony Bourdain or The Bear’s Carmy on a really bad day. Stay the hell out of that kitchen.

Produced and written by the band’s own Simen Følstad Nilsen (Aiming For Enrike, Jaga Jazzist, dEUS) at Fort som faen Studios (“Fast as Hell Studios”) in Oslo, the song is a labor of love from Shea, Følstad Nilsen, Nils Jørgen Nilsen (Honningbarna), and Tobias Osland (Hammok). The result is both a fresh new start and a return to the raw energy that defined the band’s beginnings. Maybe you can teach old dogs new tricks.

Imagine a song inspired by both the life of Craig David, a woman obsessed with Indiana Jones, the character from the sketch I Think You Should Leave and the song ‘Dumbest Girl Alive’ by 100 gecs. Can you picture that? Probably not, but this chaos of cultural references was the inspiration behind ‘I Used To Be A Real Piece Of Shit’.

“I was completely obsessed with Tim Robinson’s show I Think You Should Leave last summer and watched all the seasons about four times, laughing hysterically. In the middle of this obsession, the sketch where he says ‘I used to be a piece of shit’ jumped out, and I thought it would make a great lyric, so I saved it in my little idea bank on my phone,” Haley explains.

“I just wanted to make it fun and silly and over the top. It also makes me think of all the people that are out here working on themselves, always trying to better, going to therapy etc, me included, and it poses the question – do we really change all that much? It’s a song for everyone that used to be a piece of shit, who’s working on it, who’s still kind of a piece of shit in some ways and that’s ok!”

‘I Used To Be A Real Piece Of Shit’ was written by Shea in collaboration with Swedish songwriter/producer Daniel Hedberg and Simen Følstad Nilsen (Aiming For Enrike, Embla and the Karidotters). The track was produced by Hedberg and Preben Sælid Andersen.

One month after the release of the song ‘Final Gørl’, Shea is now ready to unveil even more new music. While the previous single had its starting point in the horror movie trope of the ‘final girl’, Sløtface continues the cinematic universe with ‘Tired Old Dog’:

“The song is written from the perspective of the stereotypical, tough ‘detective/action hero’ in movies approaching retirement age, but who is always asked to do ‘one last job’ before retiring. On this song, I let my laziness take over and politely decline this offer.”

The song was written together with producer Preben Sælid Hansen in his studio in Oslo, Norway, drawing inspiration from The Strokes and indie-rock choruses from the late 2000s. In addition to the cinematic references in the song, it also comments on Shea’s own position in the music industry:

“Sometimes I can feel like a ‘tired old dog’ in the music industry after having this band for twelve years. The song is released on my 30th birthday, which I’m not really frightened by, but this particular birthday and entering my thirties can feel a bit bittersweet as a musician and artist, since I experience the music industry as a rather age-discriminatory industry.”

Spring 2024 marks the time for yet another new musical chapter in the Sløtface story, this time crafted in collaboration with producer Preben Sælid Andersen. New single ‘Final Gørl’ is the first release with Sælid Andersen behind the production, and it was also the first to emerge after the two met in the studio. Shea describes an immediate creative chemistry, stating that the song became a clear indication of the direction she wanted to take Sløtface.

As a songwriter, Shea has a habit of categorizing her songs into two groups: “songs about me being a f***ing loser” and “songs about everything else – the beauty in the world, attempts to better oneself, etc”. ‘Final Gørl’ falls into the first category and continues to explore the trope of the same name from horror movies like Scream and Halloween. It’s a genre that Shea holds close to her heart, saying:

“In these movies the final girl is pure and virginal and better than all the other more overtly sexual women in the movie, which is why she survives. I wanted to flip the script on that, so the “I” character in Final Girl is saying no to all those rules about who she has to be. In the song I’m singing a lot of lines to the killer in a horror movie, very aware of what genre I’m in, and saying “no thanks, I don’t really want to be a part of these expectations”. To me it symbolizes that women are often expected to try so hard to be liked and be everything to everyone, and in this song I’m embracing that we as women can also be lazy losers”

Haley Shea had the following to say about the new single: “‘Nose’ is what I would call a pretty general “Sløtface anxiety” song, a recurring theme I always come back to. ‘Nose’ is a conversation between me and a loved one where I’m trying to use imagery to describe what anxiety feels like to someone who doesn’t experience it, how even the smallest things can trigger it and send me into a thought spiral that feels impossible to stop. The choruses are then the replies of someone I love reminding me to breathe, a tactic which usually helps me calm my thoughts, when done in the right way, by my partner, family and loved ones.

​​​”‘Nose’ started when I visited Odd Martin at his studio in Bergen in March of 2022 to write some songs. It ended up being a super-productive couple of days where we wrote about 7 different demos on the first day alone, and then chose a couple to flesh out on the second day. ‘Nose’ was the last song we tried out at the end of that second day.

“The mix of the heavier, rhythmic, bass-focused verses and the big, layered, poppier choruses, all combined with saxophonist Aksel Rønning adding some extra spice, grit and depth to the whole track makes it one of our absolute favorites on the EP.”
