Emerging Bristol-based indie-folk artist Eva Penney sets out to captivate audiences with her brand new single ‘Orange Mood’, a poetic and atmospheric track that seamlessly blends simplicity with sonic and emotional depth. The song, reminiscent of the evocative storytelling found in the music of Adrianne Lenker and Big Thief, showcases Eva Penney’s talent for crafting melodic and sentimental folk songs with a strong emphasis on instrumentals.
Eva says of the track: “‘Orange Mood’ is a song that has gone through many different variations – I made the first demo in 2021 at home in Devon, very much surrounded by the scenery that inspired the song. I wrote it when I had a silly crush on someone and I wanted to see if he fancied me back, so I gave him my mood ring to try on, hence the ‘orange mood’. There are a lot of references to the nature and seaside that I grew up around in the song, but nowadays the track reminds me a lot of Bristol, my current home. When I first started gigging here, it was my favourite song to play and it reminds me a lot of the beautiful friendships I made when I first came here. The track includes samples of me singing in my bathroom at home in Devon and birdsong from the garden recorded 3 years ago, mixed in with a trumpet solo written 2 years ago and a bassline perfected about 6 months ago. Out of all of them, this song is most representative of my two homes and musical influences melting together.”
