Sydney four-piece Facelift return with ‘Vertigo’, their second single following debut release ‘Ceiling Fan’. Beneath its infectious pop-punk energy, the track explores the difficulty of breaking free from destructive habits or relationships, capturing the frustrating cycle of returning to something you know is bad for you. Vocalist Sarah Bonnet explains that the lyrics began as a reflection on her own bad habits before taking on a second meaning, allowing listeners to interpret the song through their own experiences.
Musically, ‘Vertigo’ delivers a vibrant, modern take on classic 2000s pop-punk. Bright, melodic guitars and punchy, energetic drumming drive the track forward, while Bonnet’s youthful, slightly angsty vocals capture the spirit of the genre’s heyday. Effective vocal harmonies add another dimension, particularly in the catchy, singalong chorus. There’s plenty of nostalgic charm here, but the polished production keeps things sounding fresh rather than simply recreating the past.
The accompanying visualiser embraces that same throwback spirit, featuring the band performing against a simple white backdrop, with vibrant blues and oranges adding a playful splash of colour. Fun, energetic and instantly accessible, ‘Vertigo’ finds Facelift putting their own contemporary spin on a much-loved sound.
