British-Guinean singer-songwriter Jamilah Barry has released new single ‘Fuck It (On-1)’. Self-described as a “rant in music form”, ‘Fuck It (On-1)’ is a haunting and bass-heavy track about reaching the end of your tether and knowing when you’ve had enough of a situation that’s no longer serving you.
Produced by Midnight Phunk (Sophie Faith, The Silhouettes Project) and WLFY, ‘Fuck It (On-1)’ opens with warm and somber piano flourishes before rippling into an ominous and menacing number which sees Jamilah fusing the worlds of drill and R&B.
Initially beginning life as a spontaneous freestyle, the song quickly evolved into a fully-realized track that Jamilah is terming a thematic continuation of her beloved single ‘Merlot’ from 2020’s ‘Romance Me’ EP. Even going as far to quote herself when she sings “yeah I said it all before, said but you won’t notice” letting the listener know she’s on smoke and isn’t messing around.
Vocally, the track beholds a subtext in her haunting delivery of lyrics, lending itself well to the braggadocious tone and muted aggression at home with drill purists. All the while still catering to her core fanbase. Speaking on the track, Jamilah said: “This song really is like a ‘Merlot 2’ for me. I love trying new things and writing over a drill beat was something I’d wanted to do for awhile. I don’t usually swear so much when writing but this time I genuinely thought fuck It. It was a lot of fun”.
