Ahead of the release of her recently announced debut album girlhood., out November 22 via UROK, British singer-songwriter Jo Hill has shared two new songs; ‘SUPERMARKET SUSHI’ and ‘WHERE DID ELLA GO?’, offering a glimpse into what is arguably one of the most impressive debuts of the year.
‘SUPERMARKET SUSHI’ showcases Jo’s country-pop inspired songwriting in its purest form, with a muted palette and soft guitar strums paired with her crystalline vocals. Jo says, “This is my ‘Netflix and chill’ comfort anthem. It’s for those Sunday nights (almost everyone of mine) when you’ve overstretched yourself, said yes to too many things and all you want to do is curl up in a ball with either yourself, your besties or your dog and eat your comfort snack of choice. This song is about my craving for home comforts in the busyness of big city life.”
In the accompanying track, ‘WHERE DID ELLA GO?’, her deft craftsmanship takes centre stage, evolving from wiry finger-picked guitar into a vibrant, lush chorus. Jo further elaborates, “it is about one of my childhood friends that got dealt some unlucky cards. Instead of shaming her for her life choices I wanted to write an uplifting anthem singing Ella’s praises for doing whatever she needed to do to survive and just like in school, she’ll always be a badass in my eyes.” Together, both songs showcase Jo’s remarkable ability to seamlessly shift between introspective melodies and expansive soundscapes, revealing the depth of her artistry.
