Mol Sullivan debuts ‘Dog’, a communal cry of grief, gratitude and love

Independent singer-songwriter Mol Sullivan releases her deeply personal new single, ‘Dog,’ alongside a music video filmed inside her house after a devastating fire, and an intimate live performance video. The track marks her first major distribution deal after being invited to UnitedMasters’ exclusive PARTNER program, a selective initiative offering label-style support while allowing artists to retain full ownership of their masters. The deal aligns perfectly with Mol’s decade-long commitment to creative freedom and artistic integrity. The music video was featured at this year’s Milwaukee Film Festival and ‘Dog’ will also anchor upcoming works, set for release in fall 2026.

In late spring of last year, Mol lost her mother while on a European tour opening for and playing with WHY?. On the 31st of May —the night of her mother’s service— a fire broke out in Mol’s Cincinnati home, claiming the life of her partner and collaborator, Josh Evert’s beloved hound, Jackson. Sullivan’s dog, Augie, was successfully resuscitated at the scene.

In the ensuing weeks, Evert and Sullivan decided to throw themselves into creative work and finished mixing and mastering ‘Dog’. Originally written about finding unconditional love and a sense of purpose in a dark chapter of her life, they pushed forward in to channel their grief in the loss of Jackson.

After several months of not being able to step foot inside her home, Evert had the idea to make a video inside the burnt shell of Sullivan’s home. The exposed studs provided an interesting opportunity to play with shadow and light- becoming a symbolic display of all dimensions of grief, loss, joy, and love.

After experimenting with different takes, guitarists, and instruments to find the perfect “howl,” they added the jingle of Jackson’s dog tags and enlisted Will Hansen to channel a hound’s cry on pedal steel. Capturing the forlorn feeling of loss, ‘Dog’ evolved beyond a quiet ode to companionship; it became a eulogy, a thanksgiving, and an anthem for anyone who’s ever had to say goodbye before they were ready. What began as a personal reflection now stands as a shared tribute for anyone who has loved and lost a dog.

In the weeks leading up to the release, Mol invited fans on Instagram to share photos and stories of their dogs, past and present. The outpouring became the foundation for the single’s artwork, an ambitious collage of deeply loved companions and memories from those who have known the joy and sorrow of loving a dog.
