Dutch-Surinamese singer-songwriter néomí has announced her forthcoming EP Crunchy, Sad and Strangely Happy, due for release on September 18, alongside its latest single ‘Close.’ The deeply personal track explores the complicated push and pull of an unhealthy relationship, offering another glimpse into the emotional contradictions that shape the upcoming project.
Built around néomí’s delicate, crystal-clear vocals, ‘Close’ strikes a beautiful balance between intimacy and cinematic scale. Lush production and sweeping melodies give the song a sense of warmth and optimism, even as it wrestles with heartbreak and uncertainty. Every element feels meticulously crafted, resulting in a track that is both emotionally resonant and effortlessly accessible. While its subject matter may be bittersweet, there’s an underlying sense of hope that prevents it from ever feeling weighed down by sadness.
Speaking about the song, néomí says: “’Close’ is a song that is actually very much about an unhealthy form of love. The push and pull relationship where you don’t want to be together but also don’t want to let go. It is about desperately holding on, going back and forth with each other’s emotions.”
