The wait is almost over for fans of Nova Scotian queer duo Pillow Fite. With their debut album Hard Feelings, Soft Promises set for release on October 11, the duo delivers a final taste of what’s to come with their new single, ‘More Of That’.

Since the release of their debut EP Flutter in 2022, Pillow Fite have been drip feeding tasters of their first full length LP through singles ‘Atvian’, ‘Alma’ and now ‘More Of That’. The duo continues to evolve their signature sound, blending slow-burning indie-folk with unexpected elements to create a genre-defying and undeniably queer musical landscape. Something that asks, “What if Suzanne Vega fronted The Strokes, but they were gay and poor?”

The inspiration for ‘More Of That’ strikes at the heart of queer love and spontaneity. After a whirlwind encounter with a mysterious woman named Emily, lead singer Art Ross (they/them) embarked on an impulsive road trip to Saint John, New Brunswick. “I remember coming home from that trip and telling Aaron I was in love.” Art says of the meeting “He, of course, thought I was simply being very lesbian and this fascination would die down after some time apart. But it didn’t and we spent the next year in a long-distance relationship.”

The song was born out of this intense connection, with Art sending a voice memo to guitarist Aaron Green (he/him) shortly after the fateful meeting. “This one came together pretty fully formed.” he says “I just prettied it up with some Phillip Glass inspired piano textures and a big ass guitar riff in the bridge.” Green’s production is a meticulous alchemy, transforming Art’s raw lyrics into shimmering sonic tapestries. His experimental approach elevates the often tough and bleak lyrics of Pillow Fite, as they collectively create a sound that’s both intimate and expansive.
