Known for their genre-bending sound and edgy pop anthems, Tangerine Cassette is back with their darkest release yet. ‘Hey Little Baby’, out today, is a dangerously seductive track that explores the obsessive side of infatuation. With its eerie lyrics and hypnotic chorus, this twisted love song is perfect for Halloween parties, villain mode, workouts, or anyone wanting to embrace their darker side.
Natalie Cleveland, one half of the duo, reveals that ‘Hey Little Baby’ was inspired by a deeply unsettling experience with an ex. “We all have that one ex who crosses boundaries, but mine went to extremes. He started small—keeping tabs on me, not wanting me to go out with friends, stealing my skirts because he said other men were looking at me, manipulating me into staying by threatening to hurt himself. But it didn’t stop there… I found a drawer of my stuff at his place—some normal things like movie tickets, cards, a hoodie, but then things that freaked me out like my fingernail clippings in a ziplock, my hair in a ziplock, even my used tampons in a Ziploc…Wish I were kidding about these. After we broke up, he became a full-blown stalker, showing up at parties yelling me into a corner, making new social media accounts as fast as I could block him, showing up unannounced peeking in my window two states away when I never gave him the address, and forcing my car off the road once when I wouldn’t answer the phone.Still, years later. Calling me from different numbers, telling me he’s never going away and he’ll always be there… even though he’s married with kids. Cool bro, cool.”
Natalie goes on to explain, “Not sure if my therapist would approve, but ‘Hey Little Baby’ was a chance to do a role reversal and be the obsessive villain. ‘Hey Little Baby’ is something Joe from You would write—it’s all about that twisted kind of ‘love’ where someone won’t let go, no matter how unhealthy it gets.”
