Green Tea Bitches get spooked on ‘Ghosts’

Copenhagen-based Chinese-Danish duo Green Tea Bitches are getting into the Halloween spirit with their new single ‘Ghosts’. Taking a rather humorous approach to fear, the track follows a narrator who claims to have fought a polar bear and crossed the sea in a soda can, yet remains absolutely terrified of ghosts. It’s a wonderfully ridiculous premise from a band whose guiding philosophy is “bad taste means freedom.”

Musically, ‘Ghosts’ leans heavily into electroclash territory, combining gritty post-punk textures with a steady electronic beat and plenty of attitude. There are definite echoes of bis and Peaches in its playful, slightly abrasive sound, while the predominantly spoken-sung vocals add to the tongue-in-cheek delivery. Perhaps the best touch is the series of cartoonish, ghostly wails lurking in the background during the chorus, seemingly conjured up by the synths. It’s a brilliantly silly little detail that gives the track even more character.

And then there’s that gloriously simple, shout-along refrain of “I’m scared of ghosts”, practically demanding that you join in. Catchy, quirky and wonderfully unpretentious, ‘Ghosts’ is a fun little dance-punk number that embraces its own ridiculousness. Who says Halloween music has to be scary?
