TAMIW (pronounced ‘tam-yu’) are the leftfield darlings of the thriving, creative and internationally lauded Japanese indie scene.
Although a band playing multiple traditional instruments, the sound of TAWIW is strongly packed full of sampling and analogue synths. It spans overlapping genres of electronica, hip-hop and alternative, all brought together with an exquisite sense of balance, and created in the band’s own studio Hidden Place which doubles as an animal cemetery.
The two new English-language singles, TAMIW’s first release of 2024, show significantly different styles, ‘Deep ‘n’ Shallow’ blends a heavy alt bassline and Tami’s rapping, seen on earlier releases but sprinkled with new vocal tones and techniques.
‘Overcome’ is a slow-tempo ballad blending strings and violin (played by Tami herself), with a heady, grand chorus (a speciality of TAMIW’s), and merges an underground hip-hop influence with a dark and alt-electronic edge.
Tami describes the singles as “Two sides of the same coin. These are songs about destruction and regeneration after going through difficult time. We express aggressiveness and naivete, strongness and gentleness inside of ourselves on both.”
