This was the band’s first time working with producer Graham Lessard (Stars, The Barr Brothers), and they pushed themselves to evolve their sound beyond their familiar garage roots, stepping into a more modern pop production while preserving the nostalgic, throwback feel that has been central to their music. The title of the song is inspired by the unextinguishable candle on a birthday cake and the girlfriend that teases you with her steadiness.

“I love the image of a candle that refuses to go out, and that’s how I feel about the love we were trying to capture in this song. It’s the slow burn, the one that sticks with you long after the flash of a fiery moment has passed,” shares frontwoman Shannon Thomas.

Royal Castles are entering their third album cycle to continue this momentum with their upcoming EP, Singles Night, showcasing their sonic evolution and featuring the brand new single, ‘Bad Business Barbie.’ Spotlighting drummer Katrin Sawatzky’s vocals and songwriting in a fresh new moment for Royal Castles, ‘Bad Business Barbie’ is a bold love letter to the women who are tamed by patriarchy, a rally cry, a confession about vulnerability, power, freedom and the secrets we keep.

‘Bad Business Barbie’ was recorded at North of Princess Studio (Glorious Sons, Blue Stones) in Kingston, Ontario with producer, Zane Whitfield. It was workshopped in the studio with a very collaborative approach, building on a heavy groove, sultry vocals and brooding energy.

The band say, “At first we almost found the song to be a bit sleazy, it made us blush. In Happily Ever Never we have songs that explore the different stages after a break up, ‘Caprisun’ explores what happens after the final stage, after acceptance, when you start noticing new people and finding out what these new connections can become. Or as we like to call this stage: The hoe period”.

‘Caprisun’ comes with an early 90s home video featuring adorable kittens. They continue: “Those who have been following us for a while know that all of our songs somehow end up being about love. That is why we wanted to do a video that was all about kittens, even though we’re both super allergic and couldn’t breathe at the end of the shoot. The thing is, or at least according to legend, Vikings used to gift kittens to new brides as an essential part of a new household. Cats were considered appropriate since they were associated with Freya, the goddess of love. So we had to include them. Also we love kittens, even though they might lead to our death one day”.

‘Miserable’ is the second single from the duo’s upcoming album, Happily Ever Never, which was recorded with producer Marcus Anthony Calvert. Lead singer Beatrix explains that the song is about releasing angry feelings after a break-up, and embracing anger as a natural and important emotion.

“I think anger gets a bad reputation. But really, it’s about survival and giving yourself permission to feel angry for as long as you need to. It can be incredibly freeing,” says Beatrix, who was inspired by her own heartbreak. “It’s also an energetic and tough song with a lot of attitude, and we’re basically saying F U to all exes who moved on too fast,” adds guitarist Sarah.

The song comes with a video directed and filmed by Vibeke Heide, which takes place in a smash room in Oslo. “We wanted to capture the attitude of the song, and thought breaking and smashing stuff would be very suitable. We were also lucky enough to collaborate with Vibeke who has an ability to make art even out of just two people raging in a small, dark room”.
