thea wang returns with sombre acoustic single ‘Jennifer’

thea wang is back with her latest single, the melancholic yet calming ‘Jennifer’. Establishing itself immediately with an emotional and intense tone, thea is accompanied with the subtle plucking of an acoustic guitar as she unveils the story of the title character through her poignant, wistful vocals. As the song develops, thea introduces subtle overdubbed voices, as well as a haunting solo violin.

Taking thea’s ability to write folk-pop tracks that delve into the deepest of human emotions, this new single tells the heart-wrenching story of a love triangle, where the character Jennifer has been seeing another woman behind the main character’s back. thea explains: “I watched my neighbours’ confrontation, and then imagined the ultimate breakup where the main character is (almost unbelievably) happy for her partner to fall in love behind her back. The most important thing for this person is for Jennifer to be happy, and free to leave if that is what feels right to her.”

The song follows these comforting words through angelic tones of thea’s vocal rises and dips, showing off the humble nature of the main character. “Ultimately I guess it’s about a toxic relationship,” explains thea, “and about someone being treated quite badly, and the counterpoint and desperation in someone trying to keep a relationship, no matter what.”
