Yee Loi take aim at false prophets on ‘Miraclist’

Sibling punk trio Yee Loi take aim at false prophets and modern-day cult mentality on their latest single ‘Miraclist’, taken from their debut album Flicks, Licks, Party Tricks, arriving January 15. Inspired by the eerie desert landscapes of Utah, the track explores the dangers of charismatic figures who exploit vulnerable people, drawing parallels between historical cult leaders and today’s online influencers. Its lyrics cleverly adopt the perspective of a self-proclaimed miracle worker, promising salvation while exposing the manipulation behind the message.

Musically, ‘Miraclist’ is a gritty slice of swampy garage-punk rock ‘n’ roll. Distorted guitar riffs lead the charge, with subtle hints of classic Thin Lizzy in the guitar work and melodies. The bass keeps things moving beneath the guitars, while Matilda’s driving punk-rock drumming gives the track plenty of energy. Her vocal delivery has a raw rock ‘n’ roll attitude rather than an outright snarl, particularly during the shout-along chorus. It’s rough around the edges in all the right ways.

The accompanying video captures the band performing in a sweaty little dive bar, perfectly reflecting their DIY punk spirit. There’s nothing overly complicated about it, just three young musicians playing with plenty of conviction. Loud, scrappy and full of character, ‘Miraclist’ is another cracking release from Yee Loi.
