Ski Team is the solo moniker of Lucie Lozinski, an independent songwriter, singer, producer, and guitarist who’s known for her yearning lyrics, crystalline voice, and gritty instrumentation.

Her new single ‘Me’ is an experimental downtempo indie pop track. The artist teamed up with producer Daniel Knowles (Sharon Van Etten, Cigarettes After Sex), and her own brother Ian Lozinski, as well as saxaphone player Matt Podell, who she met on hinge (the two decided to create music together instead of date) to create the intoxicating musical offering.

She shares, “The song is about the struggle of adjusting someone’s role in your life, or your own role to them, and giving up control in that process. I guess it’s about realizing if you have to assign roles, maybe it’s not as special as you think. And like challenging this idea of roles being the whole of someone’s identity. It’s scary to not know who’s on your roster, or who you are without a particular person/job/trait/whatever, and just go forth into life’s abyss as a human, but it’s often better for everyone involved to get on with it. Pick yourself up, focus on yourself, and let everything and everyone else kind of settle around you.”

Listening to Montreal based musician Kaya Hoax, you’ll find yourself nodding your head with a high energy blend of mischief and passive indignation. Both urgent and celebratory, her music lives somewhere between hip hop and experimental pop, drawing inspiration from UK grime, dancehall and punk.

Over a clutter of hypnotic percussions, raw synth leads and rumbling 808s, Kaya Hoax spits verses that oscillate between fierce proclamations of independence and glimpses of utter vulnerability.

After a handful of remarkable shows around Quebec, including an incendiary set during POP Montreal, Kaya Hoax is set to release her first EP Baby Gear in May. With hyperactive hooks, infectious bass lines and earworm melodies, she presents a distinctive vision of digital bangers for irreverent femme vibes.

The next single to be unveiled from Baby Gear is ‘Hot Girls with ADD’. On this imposing banger, Kaya Hoax teams up with Magi Merlin, trading bratty verses that boast and shrug like the inner dialog of a teenage psyche. With menacing synths and a dancehall-inspired groove created alongside producer Loxley, the track casts a sonic vision that feels both urgent and celebratory. ‘Hot Girls with ADD’ is about conserving a childlike spirit on the grind, imagining oneself as an exhausted future mother, and ultimately about just wanting to get down and shake it off after a long day’s work.

Experimental pop duo YOVA are back with an urgent and impending new single ‘Feel Your Fear’.

Letting loose a runaway freight train of jumpy guitar rhythms and primal percussive rumblings, the new single from the duo of Jova Radevska and Mark Vernon is one intended to heighten the senses and toy with what drives our fears and failings. As Jova explains:

“’Feel Your Fear’ is about the human’s fallible nature to form addictions in order to alleviate pain. We can do this with a person too: we can believe that their company will save us from the challenges we are facing and we cling to that, when in fact we haven’t addressed the real cause of those feelings. It is often our insecurity and un-dealt trauma that makes us cling to people/substances, addictions in general.”

Citing ESG, Gang of Four, King Sunny Adé, and early Talking Heads as being amongst the subliminal influences that played into the track, ‘Feel Your Fear’ sees YOVA deftly update their dynamic brand of alternative pop music with hints of garage rock, Afropop and funk to gripping effect.

Produced by Mark Vernon and arranged by Rob Ellis, the track was recorded between Dorset and London and also features Daniel O’Sullivan of Grumbling Fur on bass and features the legendary Terry Edwards (PJ Harvey) on saxophone. Intending to create an unshakeable feeling of restlessness, Jova Radevska’s airy vocals toe a fine line between playful and impending, while its haunting baritone sax, sinuous bass, and meticulously timed blasts of trumpet and organ all play their part in the unsettling fabric of ‘Feel Your Fear’. As Vernon adds:

“The sonic tapestry and rapid tempo of this track is written to convey a sense of heightened urgency: the impending sense of emotional claustrophobia and resulting fear is echoed in the narrative of Jova’s lyrics. A sense of one last rushed midnight dance before emotions inexorably spiral out of control and time literally gets swallowed up before our eyes.”

Today, London-born, Turkish-Sri-Lankan musician BODUR releases her debut single ‘GORGEOUS’ via PACE. Completely pivoting from her journey under Chloe Bodur, her new alias BODUR marks her evolution as an artist and births a new creative chapter for 2023 and beyond.

“An ode to her diaspora daughters”, on ‘GORGEOUS’ BODUR explores what it means to her to belong to multiple cultures and the beauty and struggles that comes with that. Poetic metaphors such as “look what you did for your daughters, brown bread, buttered and gorgeous” represent words of appreciation for her ancestors who broke down barriers for generations that follow. Further capturing what it means to have a multi-hyphenated identity, the 25-year-old summarises the thoughts of women of colour in her own alternative realm of electronic music.

“’GORGEOUS’ defines what’s expected of a girl from my background, learning to love myself and my heritage,” explains the artist. “Every line questions what it means to be “home”. I have a constant feeling of wanting full acceptance from my Turkish and Sri Lankan roots without settling into one binary identity. It’s all about accepting the middle space, defying what’s expected of you, and loving yourself despite the barriers we’ve faced.”

Canadian experimental pop band Braids announce their new album Euphoric Recall, set for release on April 28 through Secret City Records. A freer and wholly anew effort, their fifth studio album finds the trio abandoning strategy, burning it down, and realizing their love record. Love, all of it; the unbound bliss, the budding impulses, and the messy imperfections, a supernova swirled up in a suite of bold, melodic, symphonic pop songs surrendered to the present. Braids also release their new single ‘Evolution’, a clear eyed and calm anthem that gives the record a grounded notion amidst the sprawling pace.

Of the new song, singer/guitarist Raphaelle Standell-Preston stated, “’Evolution’ in and of itself is a patient act. Our pursuit of the individual self, which comprises all realms of human emotion, is sweetened with the intention and act of patience from ourselves, from those that we love and those who love us.”

Last year, Braids teased the forthcoming album with ‘Retriever’, a luscious and meandering 9-minute journey that they called “simple in its sentiment of love and friendship, yet complex in its lush arrangement and textural experimentation.”

Experimental pop artist ko aka koala – the moniker of multidisciplinary creative KO Lee – has shared her new single ‘why is everyone so scared of me’. The song was written from the perspective of a zombie – someone who is doomed to be alone, who can’t help but hurt people around them.

Based in Los Angeles, “no limits” is the theme of KO’s (pronounced Kay-Oh) rise as one of the upcoming artists to watch – a trailblazer and pioneer. The universe of KO combines her love of left-leaning hip hop, techno, metal, and pop into something wholly and uniquely her own. She produces music that plays with the ideas of hard and soft. Astonishingly, she executes her artistic vision entirely herself – her artwork, visuals, video editing, etc.

KO has already developed a cult-like following for her style, music, and presence – she refuses to be boxed in as she forges her own identity. As a producer, songwriter, dancer, director, visual artist – she is able to connect her sonic journey with the aspects of her art we can frame on our walls or watch on our screens in the tangible world.

We had a chat with the super talented artist all about her new single, creative process, influences and more. Read the Q&A below.

Hi K.O.! How are you? What does a typical day look like for you at the moment?

“I’m doing good! I’m at the studio right now. Some days are studio days and other days I’ll be working on my artwork, video production, or video editing. I also have dance practice/rehearsal throughout. I also go to bed really late, but I’m working on that.”

For anyone that may be discovering you here for the first time, please tell us a bit about you and your sound, how you got into music and who you are influenced by.

“I’m a musician and artist based in LA. I started off DJing which introduced me to a lot of different genres of music. My sound changes a lot from song to song but they all do sound like me. I’m not too concerned with genre. I get bored so I just make what I like. I think each song is surprising to people – and I suppose that it is unexpected. Some artists I love are Avril Lavigne, Beyonce, Britney, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and Kpop!”

You’ve just released your new single ‘why is everyone so scared of me’. What was the inspiration behind the track and what do you hope fans/listeners take away from it?

“This song is kinda creepy. I was very depressed at the time and I wrote it from the perspective of a zombie – someone who hurts the people around them and is destined to be alone. It’s also about the inescapable judgement from appearances. I hope that people will feel like they don’t have to go through these things alone.”

What is your songwriting/creative process like?

“It is actually pretty different from song to song. For this one – I started off the first part of the beat and it was just saved on my computer for a while. Then I was at the studio with Kenny Harmon, who co-produced the song with me, and we finished the beat out. I wrote this one while I was playing video games. For me – it’s less pressure and I kind of distract myself so I’m not in my head so much. When the song is done, then I’ll get ideas for visuals and artwork.”

Finally, what else is next for you? Is there more new music on the way?

“A lot of new music and an EP coming!”

Singer-songwriter Katrina Ford (of Celebration and Mt Royal) shares ‘Go Deep,’ the fourth single off her debut solo EP, due June 24 via Violin Films.

Speaking on the single, Katrina wrote: “It’s ok to grow roots. I had a dream about speeding down a cliff road, in a borrowed yellow Lamborghini. Roaring to the shore, to visit a fortune teller on the pier. I was told she lies before I saw her. Confused, I left , walking past piles of riches, gold statues, jewels and cash dumped in the sand littering the beach. A family of beggars in black rags, approached me on the boardwalk. I had nothing, to give . My only valuable was to accept myself without outside influence. Everyone was trying to influence me but I was finding home within, and letting myself be rooted in my own self belief, despite the cliff dwelling Lamborgini owner, despite the lying fortune teller, despite the beggars. I could hold on.

“So self-indulgent in our elementary school fantasy of Beverly Hills Cop — directly energized by Harold Faltermer – ‘Axel F.’ I feel the leather and the steel so ornately and loveably fun. Ends a Howling Roy-Orbisonian cloned bubbles popping into the sunset.”
