Cardiff’s Guilty Party put their foot down on ‘Driving at 95’, a frantic two-minute rush through regret, longing and restless discontent. Built around the contradictory idea of finding peace by getting behind the wheel and driving away from it all, the track channels that unsettled energy into melodic indie rock.
It’s the chaos that makes ‘Driving at 95’ so much fun. Guitars box back and forth through frantic verses, while sudden tempo and dynamic shifts bring an almost math-rock-like unpredictability to proceedings. Restless, desperate vocals add to the feeling of everything teetering slightly on the edge before the chorus opens into something broader and more emotional. There’s an impressive amount packed into barely two minutes – so much, in fact, that you can’t help wishing they’d given it a little longer.
No visual is really necessary here. ‘Driving at 95’ already conjures that familiar image of getting in the car with nowhere particular to go, turning the music up and driving until your head feels a little clearer. Chaotic, cathartic and over almost as quickly as it begins.
